LABORATORY · METHOD / 05

A signal is not a finding.

Nature to model the organism, science to observe it. The method exists so that an impression is not mistaken for proof, nor proof for a decision.

01

The ladder

  1. 01Signal

Something drew attention. What it is remains unknown.

  2. 02Finding

The signal was confirmed in a source, against a criterion.

  3. 03Diagnosis

The findings were explained, with a probable cause and a rival explanation considered.

  4. 04Decision

Someone with authority chose what to do.

  5. 05Outcome

The decision was carried out and its effect measured.

A signal is not a finding. A finding is not a diagnosis. A diagnosis is not a decision. A decision is not an outcome. Each step requires its own source, criterion, authority and receipt.

The stack of examinations

Each examination sees one thing and misses another. None concludes on its own.

ExaminationWhat it seesWhat it cannot conclude alone
History and inspectionInitial account and observation: symptom and context.Identity or cause.
Laboratory testFields, counts and comparable series.Causality.
Operational CT scanSynchronized structural slices: time, systems and sources, journey, with evidentiary contrast. Locates collisions, absences and duplicates.Cause or treatment.
Operational MRIDeep relations between people, roles, consents and documents.Legal validity without a competent source.
Metabolic PETWhere time, cash, attention and capacity are spent. That value existed just because activity did.
Point-of-care ultrasoundA quick, cheap on-site check. The complete historical or systemic view.
Flow angiographyHand-offs, returns, retries and error queues. The quality of what was carried.
Biopsy and pathologyAn in-depth audit of one sample or case.Prevalence without adequate sampling.
Operational epidemiologyCohorts, denominators, incidence and recurrence. The cause of an individual case.
Controlled trialA reversible or shadow pilot with criteria set in advance.Automatic promotion without acceptance and external validity.

Metaphors under contract

No metaphor enters as an instrument merely for its elegance. It must declare what it measures, what it does not measure, and how it can be falsified.

SCI-PAPER-001 · From metaphor to testable hypothesis

For a metaphor to become an instrument, it goes through a seven-criterion sieve:

  1. A real anchor in the observed phenomenon.
  2. Declared denominator, variable and prediction.
  3. An instrument with resolution, uncertainty and limits.
  4. A rival explanation and a test able to kill it.
  5. An engineering component with an owner, verification and a way to retire it.
  6. A transfer test with no private data.
  7. Adversarial review and versioned human acceptance.
