LABORATORY · THESIS / 01

1 + 1 = 3 is a hypothesis, not a slogan.

The bet: a person with real responsibility and an artificial system with memory and method can together reach an outcome neither reaches alone. This page shows how we define that and how we intend to prove or refute it.

01

Three words that are not synonyms

HOST

The situated human pole

“It has a body, history, values, interests, responsibility and real exposure to consequences.” It sets purposes and limits, decides and answers for them.

RECORDED FACT
SYMBIONT

The artificial, instrumental pole

“It combines model, context, tools, permitted sources, external memory and rules.” It can also hallucinate, lose context and reproduce biases.

RECORDED FACT
SYMBIOSIS

The organized relationship

“It is not a synonym of the Symbiont. It is the organized relationship between the poles, their artifacts and the environment.” It names a process, not a third repository or an autonomous third entity.

02

What replaces the sum

Instead of adding a person and a machine, we describe the symbiosis of each work cycle as the outcome of a coupling.

Σₜ = C(Hₜ, Bₜ, Eₜ, Gₜ)
Hₜ
accessible state of the host in cycle t
Bₜ
accessible state of the symbiont
Eₜ
environment: sources, interfaces, memory and tools
Gₜ
governance: limits and authorization
C
coupling protocol
Σₜ
the symbiosis observable in that cycle

The third is real in a functional sense when there is a trace of interaction and a difference in outcome attributable to the coupling. It is not presumed in an ontological sense.

03

Synergy only when it beats the better of the two

SYN = U_Σ − max(U_H, U_B)
U_Σ
utility of the joint outcome
U_H
utility of the host working alone
U_B
utility of the symbiont working alone

RECORDED FACTIf SYN is not greater than zero, there was interaction, not gain. The yardstick is strict on purpose: a meta-analysis of 106 experiments (Vaccaro, Almaatouq and Malone, Nature Human Behaviour, 2024) found that, on average, human–AI combinations performed below the better of the two working alone.

04

What we do not claim

  • Consciousness or identity of the symbiosis itself.
  • Biological autopoiesis of the human–AI whole.
  • Hidden spiritual or technical causes behind coincidences.
  • That “genome”, “organism” or “metabolism” are facts: they are declared metaphors, used for thinking and bound by the method's rules.
